Myanmar is a South Asian country. She gained independence from Britain in 1948. Almost all people of the country speak the Myanmar language. There are a number of tribal rerete) languages, too. Many of them speak English as well. The people are mainly Buddhists. There are also Christians, Hindus and Muslims. The national dress, for both men and women, is the longyi, a longi tightly wrapped skirt worn from the waist to the ankles . Women wear blouses and longyis which are of bright colours and patterns. Men wear shirts and longyis with checks and patterns. Yangoon is the capital of Myanmar. It is famous for its many pagodas which are Buddhist prayer houses. The city dwellers live in concrete houses. In most families the mother manages the finances and runs the household.
